Here are some lovely pictures of Marley, a three year old Maine Coon cat.
These cat’s originated in America and are a very old domestic breed (some say as early as 1860) . Their physical appearance is very distinctive – large rectangular shaped bodies, big bushy tails (like raccoon’s hence the “coon” part of their name) and a long coat which repels rain and snow and is warm enough to protect the cat from the harsh winter’s of Maine. These are one of the biggest breed of domestic cat with some weighing up to 11kg.
Although the ancestral origin’s of this cat are not known for sure, some believe that European sailors bought long haired cats on their ships, who would mate with wild cats when they docked in New England (where the Maine part of their name comes from).
